چکیده

An important requirement of multiscale spatial databases is that topological consistency is maintained both within individual features and between co-displayed features for all scales at which they may be retrieved. Here we show how a triangulation-based branch-pruning generalisation procedure can be enhanced to enable its output to be used to build topologically-consistent multiscale data structures. A major limitation of existing branch-pruning methods, of the lack of vertex filtering, is overcome by the application of a topologically consistent, vertex priority labelling procedure. The branch pruning generalisation method is also improved by the introduction of an edge re-sampling technique and the provision of control over single and double-sided application of pruning. Experimental results of the use of the techniques are presented.

Multi-Scale Spatial Database and Map Generalisation

The constitution of multi-scale spatial databases is closely linked to map generalisation. Elements of a multi-scale spatial database include multi-scale data models, multi-scale data storage schemes, methods to generate multi-scale datasets and methods to access these datasets and present results. In this paper we proposed a formal multi-scale spatial data model with an information-rich struct...

A Multi-representation Spatial Data Model

Geo-referenced information is characterised by the fact that it may be represented on maps at different levels of detail or generalisation. Ideally a spatial database will provide access to spatial data across a continuous range of resolution and multiple levels of generalisation. Existing work on multiresolution databases has treated generalisation control as one-dimensional. Here we extend th...

Utilising urban context recognition and machine learning to improve the generalisation of buildings

The introduction of automated generalisation procedures in map production systems requires that generalisation systems are capable of processing large amounts of map data in acceptable time and that cartographic quality is similar to traditional map products. With respect to these requirements, we examine two complementary approaches that should improve generalisation systems currently in use b...

Improving Automated Generalisation for On-Demand Web Mapping by Multiscale Databases

This paper describes the generation of maps on-demand with the use of a multiscale database. It is based on an analysis of the requirements of on-demand mapping and points out the different requests and limits of on-demand cartography. The central idea is to combine two commonly used approaches in cartography: On the one hand the use of a multi-scale database which includes two or more levels o...

Rural and Urban Road Network Generalisation Deriving 1:250,000 from OS MasterMap

Roads are essential component of topographic maps and spatial databases. The challenge in automated generalisation of road networks is to derive a connected network while maintaining the structure for the intended target scale and to achieve this with minimum user intervention. A lot of methods to select, displace and simplify roads have been presented; the focus here is on the generalisation o...
